
The Honorable Andrew Card

The 2025 Buchanan Lecturer is The Honorable Andrew Card who obtained his structural engineering degree from the University of South Carolina. He was Chief of Staff of President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2006 and Secretary of Transportation under President George H.W. Bush from 1992 to 1993. His lecture is entitled “From Civil Engineering to Politics”.
Also on the agenda is Professor Andrew Whittle who will be presenting his 2024 Terzaghi Lecture entitled “Soil Models in Prediction, Design, and Geotechnical Problem Solving”. Dr. Whittle is the Edmund K. Turner Professor of Civil Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an international consultant.

The lectures will take place in person at the Hilton Hotel and Conference Center in College Station, TX, and will begin at 2:00 pm US Central Time on November 7th, 2025. Please relay to colleagues and students. A video will be posted here afterwards for those who are unable to attend. I hope to see many of you at the lecture which will be followed by a photo and a reception for all participants at our house.
